Polish PM hits out against internal EU borders

Now is not the time to put up internal European barriers; in a crisis it is time for more integration and unity.

That was the message from the Polish Prime Minister in a speech to the European Parliament today, a week after his country took over the rotating EU presidency.

He said: “Europe, with its institutions, its budget and its objectives, is not the source of this crisis. And following those who say the opposite would be a fatal mistake. Undoing European construction at this time, and turning to nationalism as an answer to the crisis, would be a very big mistake.”

Poland has taken over from Hungary for the six-month presidency, and it is promising to coordinate on key issues with the countries due to hold the post next year: Denmark and Cyprus.
