Libyan rebel council receives boost from Turkey

Turkey has shown support for the Libyan rebels by recognising the Transitional National Council as the true representatives of the people and promising nearly 140 million euros in aid.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu visited the eastern stronghold of Benghazi, where, as well as money, he pledged to support a united Libya:

“Turkey will support the demands of the Libyan people and the unity of Libya. Therefore we have declared a roadmap, and this roadmap will underline the basic principles of such a transformation.”

Shaking hands with his TNC counterpart, Ali al-Essawi, Davutoğlu said that it was time for Gaddafi to leave the country.

The new aid money is in addition to an earlier pledge of close to 69 million euros.
