Monaco is hoping the marriage of its Prince will usher in a new age of old-style glamour in the Principality.
Albert the Second and Charlene Wittstock held their civil wedding ceremony in the crimson-clad throne room of the Pink Palace – watched by their close family and friends. It was the same room used by Albert’s father Prince Rainier the third for his civil wedding to the Hollywood actress Grace Kelly.
Charlene looked serene as she gave her consent – agreeing to join one of Europe’s oldest ruling families.
Albert’s youngest sister Princess Stephanie could not hold back her tears of joy and emotion.
Afterwards the couple made the traditional appearance on the palace balcony, before going down amongst their subjects in the square.
Around the tiny Mediterranean city state, thousands of people thronged the streets to witness the spectacle for themselves on giant outdoor screens.
There was a spontaneous round of applause when the couple made their vows.
