Maersk line, the world’s largest shipping container company has suspended operations at a number of Iranian ports as a result of tightening US sanctions on the Islamic republic.
Last week the United States blacklisted Tidewater Middle East co and banned US companies from dealing with the Iranian port operator.
The move could deprive Iran of crucial food shipments such as wheat, rice and bananas.
Maersk claims that it could take weeks before it reschedules its operations in the region. Dubai is a potential destination where Maersk could then partner companies that are not bound by US sanctions.
Washington suspects that Tidewater Middle East co is run by Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
International sanctions are in place to counter Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons programme.
