Poland takes over EU presidency

world news

Poland has taken over the EU presidency from Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban in an official flag handover.

It is the first time the country has been at the helm since it joined the EU bloc in 2004.

The presidency comes during a period of huge economic challenges in Europe and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has made economic growth and reform inside the EU a priority during his sixth month presidency.

Earlier this week protesters took to the streets demonstrating in the Polish capital Warsaw over low wages and the cost of living, a common scene across Europe as people react angrily to austerity measures.
