world news

Young people in Germany can breathe a sigh of relief – there is no more compulsory military service as of today.

A package of reforms was introduced last year to make the German military smaller but more flexible.

The Bundeswehr will be reduced in size by a quarter to a maximum of 185,000 supported by 55,000 civilians, and will now have to rely entirely on volunteers.

There has been compulsory military service since 1957.
