The Pope has sent his first tweet, using the occasion to announce the Vatican’s new Internet information portal.
The Twitter message read Dear Friends, I just launched News.va Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI, referring to the news portal which will bring together information from the Vatican’s existing media including the official daily Osservatore Romano.
Youtube footage of the launch shows the Pontiff being shown around the iPad by several cardinals. The screen-saver on the tablet was a photo of the Pope in his younger days with his family.
The Vatican has only recently started to embrace social media to spread its message to a wider, more modern audience and improve its communication with the outside world.
