Two French journalists kidnapped 18 months ago in Afghanistan have been freed along with their guides. Confirmation of their release came from the office of President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The television channel for which the journalists worked, France 3, was first to break the news.

Hervé Ghesquière and Stéphane Taponier were taken hostage in December 2009 and are expected back on French soil on Thursday.
