Friends of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez say his enemies should stop dreaming and his allies should stop worrying about his health. Even his mother has been on state television, insisting her son is fine, although he has not been seen in public since a June 10 operation in Cuba for a swollen pelvis.
Photos have been released of Chavez in the company of close socialist comrade Fidel Castro, in Havana. Officials in Caracas insist their 56-year-old boss is recovering well, and should be back for Venezuela’s 200th anniversary on July 5.
Vice President Elias Jaua said: “The national and international right-wing are going crazy, rubbing their hands together… even talking about the death of the president. We will have Chavez for a long time.”
Among the prayers sent up for their commandante, as he is called, went the get-well-soon wishes of eastern Venezuela’s Guayu tribe.
