Michele Bachmann, a favourite of the conservative Tea Party movement in the US, has become the latest Republican officially to join the race for the 2012 presidential nomination.
The 55-year-old member of the US House of Representatives told a crowd of supporters in her birthplace in Iowa that America could not afford another four years of President Obama.
“Make no mistake about it, Barack Obama will be a one-term president,” Bachmann said.
Bachmann is attempting to establish herself as the conservative alternative to front-runner Mitt Romney among a crowded field of Republican candidates.
A former tax lawyer, Bachmann is the head of the Tea Party caucus in the House and is a fiscal hawk, as well as a strong critic of gay marriage and abortion.
