President, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has tweeted to his people on the anniversary of an historic battle. The message on the social networking site has heightened concern about his health.
It is the first message from their normally loquacious president to the Venezuelans for a fortnight. It said nothing about his health or when he would return from Cuba.
“The President is recovering satisfactorily. We are not absolutely sure as to when he will return, we have to wait for the doctors’ recommendations,” explained his brother, Adan who is the Governor of the State of Barinas.
The president, a close ally of Fidel Castro, underwent an operation two weeks ago in Havana at the end of a regional tour for an abscess on his groin. Rumours are rife he could be suffering from cancer. Information is scarce:
“The President is mainly in the hands of a foreign government. Nobody knows what is happening to him,” said the Mayor of Caracas, Antonio Ledezma.
The 56-year-olds absence has highlighted the socialist leader’s total dominance of politics in Venezuela. The former paratrooper swept to power in 1998. He faces an election next year which he predicted last January he would win.
