FBI nabs alleged Boston mobster

The FBI on Thursday arrested alleged mobster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger in Los Angeles after 16 years on the run.

The suspected Boston crime lord was wanted in connection with 19 murders.

Bulger was picked up in the Santa Monica area of the city and arrested along with his long-term girlfriend Catherine Grieg. Police say they received a tip-off after a recent publicity campaign to locate the fugitive.

Bulger is accused by US authorities of leading the Winter Hill gang, a group made up largely of Irish-Americans who ran gambling and drug rackets in the Boston area in the 1970s and 80s.

He had also been an FBI informant before going on the run.

The 81-year-old was said to be the inspiration for Jack Nicholson’s character Frank Costello in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning film ‘The Departed’.
