European planemaker Airbus has cemented one of the largest orders in civil aviation history at Le Bourget airshow in Paris. In terms of the number of aircraft, it is the largest-ever single order for Airbus. It is for a record 200 of its A320neo from Malaysian discount carrier AirAsia, who will pay about 13 million euros for the lot.
Underscoring the shifting balances in the industry. India’s lowcost Indigo on Wednesday placed an 11 million euro order for 180 planes. The AirAsia deal eclipsed that. Ten years ago, Air Asia had just two planes.
Only major wide-body Airbus orders from Emirates and Qatar topped the fetching price of the Air Asia sale.
The A320neo is a 150-passenger jet, for delivery in 2015. Indian lowcost GoAir also confirmed an order for 72 of the same type of planes.
