Deadly blasts target guards in Iraq

world news

Two bombs have killed at least 21 people in Iraq. The blasts came from both a car bomb and a suicide bomber in the region of Diwaniya, south of Baghdad. The impoverished area has a mainly Shi’ite population and several armed groups are thought to be active there.

The attack targeted a checkpoint outside the provincial governor’s house just as guards were changing shift. Officials say most of the victims are bodyguards.

In another attack on the government last week, gunmen killed nine people in a provincial council building in Baquba.
