China was braced for more torrential rain on Monday after deadly flooding forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.
At least 170 are dead or missing and up to half a million people have been evacuated. The downpours started in the first week of June as the country’s rainy season arrived early. The Zhejiang province in the Yangtze Delta has been hit hardest.
Authorities estimate that 550 million euros’ worth of crops have been wiped out as the water wreaks a trail of destruction across the region’s farmland.
The region was already reeling from its worst drought in half a century before the rain fell.
Heavy flooding in China last year left 4,300 people dead or missing.
