Putting a twist on liberation, a sculpture honouring the advance of the Soviet Red Army into Nazi-allied Bulgaria in World War II has been given a make-over by unidentified hands, in the capital Sofia. The nine newly painted figures took on an American comic-book look. Such an unauthorised act in Communist times would have been punishable by death.
