A court in Indonesia has sentenced radical cleric Abu Bakar Ba’asyir to 15 years in prison.

The 72-year-old was found to be behind the formation and funding of a terrorist group that was involved in a plot to kill the country’s president.

Around 3,000 security personnel are on high alert in and around the court in the capital Jakarta, amid reports of possible violence following the verdict.

Although he commands little support in Indonesia, a guilty verdict could anger radical groups in the country.

Ba’asyir said the charges against him were “engineered by America.”
