Nearly 7,000 Syrians are reported to have fled into neighbouring Turkey following the crackdown on Jisr al-Shughour by forces loyal the the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Temporary camps have been put in place to provide food and shelfter and the UN says another one is being established to take a further estimated 2,500 people.

Witnesses say that up to 10,000 people are sheltering near the border, which is about 20 kilometres away from the town.

It is thought many more refugees will attempt to cross into Turkey in the coming days, sparking a humanitarian crisis as the agencies struggle to cope.
