Syrian state TV has shown what the government claims are mass graves containing the mutilated bodies of 10 security force members.
The report said the men were killed by armed groups in the besieged town of Jisr al-Shughour in the north of the country.
As the fighting continues rebels claim that some army personnel are defecting.
“There are some officers and soldiers who deserted the military with their guns. Separately, the people collected weapons from the villages. They are also turning gas canisters into improvised bombs. Some officers have now started to train the people”.
Jisr al-Shughour was the target of heavy shelling by Syrian forces over the weekend.
The government says it was trying to restore order after 120 security personnel were killed last week.
Reports are hard to verify because most foreign journalists are banned from entering the country.
