Yemen: conflicting claims over Saleh

world news

| |

Yemen’s opposition TV claims that President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been killed following an attack on the presidential palace in the capital Sanaa.

The ruling party insist that the president is fine and have announced he is due to give a news conference shortly.

Other reports suggest that Saleh has been injured and four of his presidential guard killed. The speaker of the parliament is also said to be in a critical condition.

It is thought a mosque in the president’s residence came under artillery attack by the tribal federation opposed to his rule.

Following Friday prayers, witnesses said heavy shelling rocked the commercial neighbourhood in southern Sanaa as residents scrambled for cover.

Heavy fighting is ongoing.
