New man in Milan

For the man who beat Berlusconi Thursday was a double celebration. As Italy celebrated it’s National day, it was also the first day in office for the new Mayor of Milan, leftist Guiliano Pisapia. It was clear many people were there to support the man who has wrested control of the country’s financial capital from the right.

Pisapia said, “I believed it right to openly claim my affiliation to the Left-wing, and this was much appreciated because trying to fight the Right pretending to be a moderate, to be from the Right, made us lose before”.

Milan was a stronghold for Berlusconi, the base of his vast business and media empire. For many people this is a turning point for politics in Italy

This woman said, “I’m celebrating the election of our Pisapia, a wonderful man, brilliant, honest and serious.”

Euronews correspondent Selene Verri says what is impressive is the passionate almost football-like support that Pisapia seems to provoke. It seems Berlusconi has finally discovered an adversary able to challenge his own popularity.
