More than 12 thousand people have had to be evacuated from their homes in central Russia after fire broke out in a military arsenal.

An estimated ten thousand tonnes of ordnance are stored at the depot in Izhevsk in the region of Udmurtia.

Three people have been taken to hospital. The authorities do not know what caused the fire.

It comes only a week after a blaze at a military base in Bashkortostan in eastern Russia, which injured six.

Some officials think it may have been sparked by a nearby wildfire, but others say it was caused by ammunition exploding as it was being transported.
