The hackers who broke into Google’s email service Gmail had access to accounts for months says the Internet security expert who discovered the breach.
Google claims that Chinese hackers tried to steal the passwords of hundreds of Gmail accounts belonging to US government officials, Chinese activists and journalists.
A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry denied the claims however: “Hacking is an international problem. China is also a victim of hacking. Claims that the Chinese government supports hacking activities are totally groundless and are driven by an ulterior motive.”
The hackers are also suspected of phishing, meaning they sent fake emails to people trying to trick them into giving up personal and security information such as passwords and account numbers.
