Oil giant Total is planning to convert many of its French service stations to discount outlets charging the same sort of prices found at those belonging to supermarkets.
Total, which has more than 2,000 petrol stations in France, has been testing out the low cost concept for the past year at 45 locations.
It said it did not anticipate sparking a price war with this move.
