Rustam Makhmudov, the main suspect in the 2006 killing of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya has been arrested, according to reports from Russia.
Said to have been detained in Chechnya, Makhmudov is accused of shooting the reporter in an apparent contract killing near her flat in Moscow.
Two years ago, two of his brothers Dzhabrail and Ibragim and a third man were acquitted over suspected involvement in the killing. But Russia’s Supreme Court overturned the verdict and reopened the enquiry with the same suspects.
Rustam Makhmudov avoided capture and had remained at large since before the trial.
Politkovskaya investigated rights abuses in Chechnya and high-level corruption in Russia. Her killing sparked outrage worldwide.
