Dutch dope ban to go ahead on May 1 Long known for its liberal soft drug policy, the Dutch government now plans to ban tourists from buying cannabis in the country’s famous “coffee shops”. Restrictions will also be imposed on Dutch citizens by the end of the year. Officials say it is part of a nationwide programme to promote health and tackle crime but some fear it will drive the soft drug trade underground.
