The people of Joplin, Missouri are trying to come to terms with the devastation left behind when a deadly tornado ripped through their community.
At least 116 people were killed and around 400 injured. But as the search goes on those numbers are bound to rise.
One traumatised resident with her husband said, “it was the most frightening 15 seconds of our lives.”
Staff in the local hospital had only minutes to get patients into corridors and away from windows before the twister hit.
The monster tornado was more than 1.5 kilometres wide and was the ninth deadliest of all time in the US. So far nearly 500 people have been killed in what is just the start of the tornado season.
