Pakistani militants attack Karachi military base

Pakistani security forces say they are close to ending a shoot out with a group of militants holed up in the country’s largest naval aviation base at Karachi.

Fifteen gunmen, thought to be Pakistani Taliban, have killed at least 11 people and injured a dozen others. At one point they were said to be holding Chinese military officials hostage.

A series of explosions were heard at the Mehran base when fuel tanks are thought to have caught alight.

The gunmen’s first targets were several multi-million euro war planes. Eyewitnesses say the militants used rocket propelled grenades to damage and destroy them.

An attack of this sort had been expected after the Taliban vowed to retaliate for the death of the al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a US raid earlier this month.
