Several thousand demonstrators have staged a protest against the G8 summit of leading industrial nations that starts in France on Thursday.

They marched through the French port town of Le Havre, close to Deauville where the gathering is being held.

Banners carried slogans such as “Money for health, not for banks”.

No arrests were reported although towards the end of the day some protesters attacked offices and banks, tagging walls and smashing some windows.

French authorities have deployed a massive police presence around Deauville itself to pre-empt any kind of demonstration affecting the two-day summit.
