Fatal tremor strikes western Turkey

An 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck western Turkey on Thursday, killing at least two people and injuring nearly 100.

The tremor happened last night at 11.15pm local time.

Its epicentre was in the small town of Simav, where it caused the collapse of four buildings and sent residents running from their homes. Electricity and telephone phone lines are reported to be down.

The quake was followed by 50 aftershocks, with some being felt as far away as Istanbul.
