The European Commission President has been laying the foundations for new ties with Kosovo – specifically a new EU-funded municipal building at Gracanica.

But Jose Manuel Barroso also warned authorities they needed to press on with reforms if they wanted to join the EU.

After a meeting with Prime Minister Hashim Thaci in Pristina, Barroso said: “Kosovo can and must also help itself in order to make progress towards its goal of European Union membership.”

He added: “Kosovo must press forward with its reforms with determination, political responsibility, and the spirit of compromise.”

Kosovo is one of the biggest recipients of EU cash per capita in the world.
