Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has said people living in southern European countries – such as Greece – will have to retire later and take fewer holidays.

Responding to voter anger in Germany at euro zone bailouts, Merkel said “We cannot have a (common) currency and one person gets lots of holiday and another very little. That doesn’t work in the long term.”

Speaking at a political event for her conservative Christian Democrats in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Merkel added: “Germany will help, but only when the others try.”

Greece will raise its retirement age to 65 for men this summer. It is currently possible to stop working there in one’s mid- to late-50s.
The official German retirement age is being raised from 65 to 67.
