Syrian government denies mass grave claims

world news

| |

In Syria, the government has denied that a mass grave has been found near the southern city of Deraa. But footage seeming to show bodies being dug up appears to contradict that claim.

Local people say 13 bodies have been discovered in the grave. Human rights campaigners say another mass grave was found on Monday.

Dozens are thought to have died when the army moved into Deraa last month to tackle ongoing unrest. This is impossble to verify, as foreign journalists are banned from Syria.

On the border with Lebanon, intermittent gunfire can be heard. One man said tanks have surrounded the villages of Arida and Tel Kelakh and claimed soldiers are searching houses and killing anyone they find.

The Syrian state news agency says five soldiers have been killed in confrontations with armed groups in Tel Kelakh.
