Kenyan Olympic marathon champion, Sammy Wanjiru has died after falling from a balcony at his home in the Rift Valley town of Nyahururu.

Initial information suggests the 24-year-old Beijing winner killed himself, but his death is subject to further investigation.

Jasper Ombati is from the Kenyan Police:

“Samuel Kamau Wanjiru jumped from the first floor of his house and he was badly injured, and when he was rushed to the hospital the doctors tried to resuscitate him but unfortunately he passed on.”

Wanjiru has a history of domestic strife, last December he was charged with threatening to kill his wife and maid and wounding his security guard with a AK-47.

His wife subsequently withdrew the charges claiming they had reconciled.

His death came about when his wife returned home unexpectedly to find the athlete with another woman, according to local media.

His wife then allegedly locked the door and leapt from the window in a rage.

Both women continue to be questioned by police.

Wanjiru suffered internal injuries from the fall and died in hospital after attempts to revive him failed.
