Clashes mark Palestinian “Naqba”

world news

| |

A Palestinian teenager has died following clashes with Israeli police in Jerusalem on Friday to mark the commemoration of Naqba.

The word means “catastrophe” which is how they view the creation of Israel in 1948 and the consequent exodus of Palestinians from the region.

Naqba day is officially marked on Sunday but demonstrations linked to it started on Friday and have been going on all weekend.

Protests have taken place not just in Israel but around the Arab world. There were demonstrations in Jordan and in Cairo where hundreds of Palestinians and Egyptians gathered in front of the Israeli embassy.

They called for an end to the siege in Gaza and the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state.

It is estimated that around two million people living in Arab countries around Israel are Palestinian refugees.
