The jatropha plant was hailed as ‘green gold’ when it first emerged in the mid 2000s; here was a tree that produced oil-rich seeds that could be used as a biofuel but, unlike sugar cane, it grew in arid conditions and so would not compete with land needed for food crops.
 
But it has been found not to yield as much oil as had been hoped. Undeterred some farmers in Zambia are trying to grow the crop in a more holistic and environmentally-friendly way.
