German Greens gain first state premier

world news

Germany has its first ever Green state premier after Winfried Kretschmann, was formally elected to the post in the rich south-western state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

His leadership will come under intense scrutiny. Some Greens hope Germany’s next chancellor might even come from their ranks.

A general election is due in 2013.

Kretschmann is to head a coalition of the Green Party and the Social Democratic Party.

The state of Baden Wuerttemberg is home to a number of powerhouses in the German economy
namely Daimler, Porsche and Bosch.

The 62-year-old got the nod after he emphasised his socially conservative values while on the campaign trail.

The Greens have been junior coalition partners before, but have never taken the helm in federal or state government.
