A 91-year-old man has been found guilty of helping to kill thousands of Jews in the Sobibor Nazi concentration camp during World War II.

John Demjanjuk, who is of Ukrainian origin, was sentenced to five years in prison by a court in Munich for his involvement in the deaths of almost 28,000 Jews while he was a guard at the camps for six months in 1943.

The prosecution had asked for a six year prison sentence, against the maximum tariff of 15.

Demjanjuk, who had denied the charges, was expatriated from the US two years ago to face trial.
