Italian scientists in Sicily have developed an early and accurate pre-natal test for the blood disease thalassaemia. The genetic disorder is common in countries around the Mediterranean and in South East Asia – the World Health Organisation estimates 300,000 children are born with thalassaemia syndrome around the world each year.
