Italian Army clears rubbish in Naples

world news

The Italian Army has been brought in to clear tonnes of rubbish from the streets of Naples.

It comes a week before the local elections. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is due to hold a rally in the city this Saturday.

The centre-left opposition is outraged by what they say is political expediency:

An estimated four thousand tonnes of rubbish is lying in the streets.

The problem, which contributed to the downfall of Berlusconi’s predecessor, is the result of years of corruption and political difficulties.
