Obama withholds bin Laden photos

US acknowledgement that Osama bin Laden was unarmed when shot dead by its forces still leaves the exact circumstances of his death unclear.

Photos taken after the assault on his compound show no weapons but three men dead in pools of blood. Emotional responses around the world vary over whether, as Washington said, the raid in Pakistan delivered justice.

The US president decided not to release photos of bin Laden’s body, saying they could be used against American interests.

Barack Obama said: “The there is no doubt that we killed Osama Bin Laden. It is important for us to make sure that very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an incitement to additional violence, as a propaganda tool.”

Obama is visiting Ground Zero today, in Manhattan, where terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, ordered by bin Laden, claimed nearly 3,000 lives. Some – not all – of their family members were invited to meet the president. This is the first time for Obama at the site.
