Basque militant separatists ETA are to stop extorting money from businesses. The announcement, was made in a letter sent to employers’ associations in the northern Basque Country and neighbouring Navarra region.
ETA has traditionally financed its operations through extortion but it said a “new era” has started.
The group, which has killed 825 people since the 1960s in its campaign for an independent Basque homeland, declared a cease-fire last September and termed it permanent in January but the government insists it must lay down its arms and disband.
