A very British monarchy

In partnership with

Lise Pedersen is in London for euronews, speaking to famed style guru and writer Peter York. How does he read the mood in the capital?

“The mood in the streets of London, well, meaning these streets, is jubilant and full, because it’s absolutely full of foreigners. There are practically no British people there. British people are grumpy and don’t like to admit that they think that this is at all exciting, so they like to say to each other ‘I’m going to go to Uzbekistan, anywhere but there!’”
“But the Americans love it, it’s like a Disney invasion and the Chinese love it because it’s so different from their own home lives.”
Lise Pedersen: “So this event has attracted a huge media and tourist attention, but what would you say to the sceptics and those who even question the very existence of the monarchy?”
Peter York:
“Well, I’d say go on scepticing, because it’s perfectly valid to scepticate – if there is such a verb; but in the meantime what I personally find fascinating is not the event itself - though it is a bit fascinating it’s the media village. Behind here is more technology than the whole of Hollywood, more vans, more make-up trays, more tall things for people to take high shots from, it’s absolutely extraordinary industry up there, and that’s lovely. We’re all enjoying that.”
Lise Pedersen: “What does this event say about Britain today?”
Peter York:
“It doesn’t actually say very much. It says, ‘Well the underlying reality is that Britain is a modern democracy, it’s a constitutional monarchy, just like Holland, or the Scandinavian monarchies, in reality it’s just the same.’ We do our monarchy differently, the aesthetic of our monarchy is different, the style is quite different, so people like that, thinking  ‘If you’ve got a Monarchy, if you’ve got it, why not flaunt it?’“
Lise Pedersen: “And that’s what they come here to see?”
Peter York:
“And that’s what they come here to see. Instead of Dutch bicycling monarchs.”
