Eight American troops from the NATO-led force in Afghanistan have been shot dead by an Afghan air force pilot at Kabul airport. An American contractor and the gunman were also killed in the shootout.

British media reports quoted an Afghan security official who said the pilot was suffering from “mental illness” and got involved in an argument. However the Taliban said they had ordered the killings.

The shootings follow a series of attacks by Afghan security forces against their NATO colleagues carried out by so-called “rogue soldiers”.

It is believed that rapid recruitment into the Afghan military has raised fears that the Taliban have infiltrated the service.

The nationalities of those killed have yet to be released.
