William Arthur Philip Louis was just 21 hours old when he was presented to the world by his parents, Charles and Diana, the day after his birth on 21st June, 1982.

As the eldest son of the heir to the throne, William is second in line. He became aware of his position and responsibility from an early age, according to Princess Diana’s private secretary (1988-96), Patrick Jephson: “His mother was very straight with him about that. She told him he had been born to fullfil a particular duty, that it would be a heavy burden, but that it would also be an opportunity to use his enormous influence for the good of those less fortunate than himself,” he says.

In 1995, 13-year-old prince William began his studies at Eton – a school reknowned for several centuries for training the country’s most elite men.

Before he could finish school, he had to endure one of life’s toughest tests when his mother died. William was just fifteen years old.

Royal commentator Jennie Bond says it deeply affected the young man: “William is quite a private person. Obviously he’s been profoundly affected by his mother’s death. He has said that he thinks of her every single day.”

After a year’s break from studying, William arrived at St. Andrews University in Scotland in September 2001, accompanied by his father.

He graduated with a degree in Geography, and also found his future bride, Kate Middleton, who graduated in Art History. During their second year at St. Andrews, the couple lived with a roommate in a flat on Hope Street.

The lady that will soon become a princess had quite a normal start to life. Catherine Middleton, was born the eldest of three children, on 9th January, 1982 to an air hostess mother and a pilot father. Later her parents would make their money through a mail order company.

Like any normal couple, William and Kate had their ups and downs. In 2007 they split up for a while. The couple blamed the press, who accused Kate of not doing anything since leaving university, dubbing her ‘Waity Katy’.

After ten years of being together, they finally announced their engagement last November.
