Syrian pro-democracy campaigners have called today “Great Friday” and great have been their numbers across the country.
Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Deraa, a day after President Bashar al-Assad formally ended Syria’s five-decade-old state of emergency. Such scenes have been replicated in several other cities, including Homs, Hata and the capital Damascus.
It comes despite a warning from the government that further dissent will not be tolerated. Witnesses say at least nine people have been killed after police opened fire with live rounds and tear-gas.
More than 200 people are said to have been killed since pro-democracy protests erupted more than month ago.
