In the Europe Weekly review of important stories, Hungary’s ruling party is criticised as undemocratic, over a new constitution. Tensions remain at the Italian-French border. Brussels writes a new cheque for Chernobyl, but a proposed EU budget increase is poorly received. MEPs propose something to liven up the next elections. There is also talk of a new ‘star’ president for Europe.

In the week to come, Berlusconi and Sarkozy will discuss migration on Tuesday, also the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. Happier things are in store with the royal wedding in Westminster on Friday and the beatification of Pope John Paul II on Sunday — Labour Day.
