Misrata’s most acute shortages may be in the city’s hospitals, which are struggling to cope with the flood of injuries, are ill-equipped to deal with the sorts of wounds they are seeing, and are lacking in personnel.
“The daily death toll is about 8 to 10. So on the basis of the time we’ve spent here so far we can count more than 100 injured and around 80 dead.
Our main needs include surgical instruments because here we only have classical instruments but not for battlefield surgery.
We also need nurses because most of those who were here before were from Asian countries and as soon as they could they left,” says Dr. Paolo Grosso of the Italian NGO Emergency.
