Somali pirates seized an Italian tanker with 21 crew members onboard off the coast of Oman on Thursday.
The hijacking of the ‘Rosalia D’Amato’ happened at 0200 GMT. Shots were fired in the attack but no-one was injured, according to the AFP news agency.
The European Union’s anti-piracy taskforce EU Navfor said the 74,500 tonne vessel was on its way to Bandar Imam Khomeini in Iran from Brazil with a cargo of soya when an armed pirate gang onboard a single skiff attacked.
“Coalition warships had communications with the vessel and were told: ‘pirates onboard stay away’,” the EU force said in a statement.
