Art attack in Avignon

Vandals have destroyed two photographs by controversial artist Andres Serrano at the Lambert collection in Avignon’s contemporary arts museum in France. Three guards who tried to intervene were also assaulted. One is his infamous “Piss Christ”, which was condemned by US conservatives when it went on show there in the 1980s.

At the weekend hundreds of Catholics demonstrated in front of the museum in protest, and the Catholic Bishop of Avignon has called for the “odious” work’s removal. Death threats have also been made against the curators of the exhibition.

In 2007 several Serrano works were attacked while on display in Sweden by an extreme right-wing group.
